In the game, you choose to evolve, and then the game shows this by having many years pass and all of your species has become this new evolution. For one, variation within your species never occurs. However, while the themes are pretty spot on, how they choose to show evolution isn’t quite as accurate. If the fruit is high up, your creature can evolve over time to become taller, thereby making it more successful and more fit for its environment. If the vegetation is more widely available, then your organism will be better equipped to survive if your are a herbivore. As you encounter different animals, you adapt to the situation around you. Now, the themes of Natural Selection and evolution are pretty spot on in spore. From here, the biology part becomes less important, so this is where I’ll stop. Everything you do eventually leads to a point where your creation eventually gains full sentience, and the game becomes about managing a civilization. Creatures can form packs using songs and certain calls, and you can choose to be a social and passive creature, or a violent and aggressive one. From here, the evolutionary options open up much more. Eventually though, your creature evolves past the first stage, and enters dry land. There are many ways that you can play this game. You can evolve to add spikes that make it harder for other organisms to attack you, or increase your speed by making your creature smaller and adding things like tails that help you propel yourself forward. As you play, you evolve, deciding whether or not you want to a herbivore, a carnivore, or an omnivore. You spawn in a large ocean, surrounded by other different species, and your entire goal at first is to just survive. So in spore, you start as a random multi-cellular but microscopic creature on an alien world. The game has a huge emphasis on evolution and natural selection, which is conveniently what we learned and discussed this week. While I won’t say it’s incredibly realistic, it definitely has science and specifically biological themes, especially during the earlier parts of the game, which is something I’ll get into during the plot summary.
